Enron case
Mr. Reiker, testifying in the fourth week of the trial in
Mr. Lay, 63, and Mr. Skilling, 52, are accused of conspiring to defraud Enron, the former energy-trading giant that filed for bankruptcy in December 2001. Mr. Skilling, who abruptly quit the company in August 2001, is charged with conspiracy, fraud and sinside trading. Mr. Lay is accused of fraud and conspiracy..
Ms. Rieker,
Who joined Enron in 1990,
Clarified testimony from Mr. Koeing that as far back as January 2000,
Mr. Skilling had directed last-minute changes to earnings results to put them in line with analysts expectations..
When the consensus expectations of analysts suddenly rose by 1 cent a share,
to 31 cents,
she said she “panicked.”
But a day later, when she was told that Enron would report 31 cents a share,
Mr. Koeing explained that Mr. Skilling and the chief accounting officer,
Richard A. Causey,
Had decided that the numbers should be changed.
She modified the news release that day..
In preparation for the anlysst meeting that quarter,
Ms. Rieker had written in a draft news release that revenues of more than $150 million in Enron’s broadband unit included that sale of unused fiber optic cable,
Or so-called dark fiber..
“Mr. Skilling asked me if we had to put that language in the press release,” she said. “I said yes, because virtually all of the revenues came from the sale of dark fiber..
Ms. Rieker also said that Mr. Lay told the company’s directors in October 2001 that Enron’s highly promoted retail energy unit had undergone “lots of retooling” to address chaotic billing and poor cash flow.
But he neglected to disclose those issue days later to wall street,
While praising the division’s reported profitability.
The goal for Y Combinator's young entrepreneurs is twofold: to make something people want (which is the company's motto); and to stretch their financing long enough for additional investment or to get acquired. For instance, Mr. Graham's former company, Viaweb, which made software to build commercial Web sites, was bought by Yahoo and reborn as store.yahoo .com. One Y Combinator business created last summer, a company that uses cellphones for social networking, got financing from a venture capital firm. Two other Y Combinator companies, a calendar Web site called Kiko.com and a news site, Reddit.com, received additional angel financing.
After being accepted, Mr. Yuen and his team established two start-ups in the last seven months: one he gave up on; the other, called TextPayMe, is a service that sends cash payments to an online account through text messaging — akin to PayPal but using
community more comfortable expressing itself through programming code than coherent paragraphs. Among his essays, "How to Start a Startup" is a siren call, resonating with Gen Y programmers pondering quarter-life crises and with college students too inexperienced to be jaded.
Then one night last spring, he was sitting in his apartment, surfing the Web. He went to Slashdot.org ("news for nerds") and saw an article that Paul Graham, the essayist and guiding light of computer programmers, was establishing a start-up company, later called Y Combinator, which would be giving seed money to hackers to start businesses. The word "hacker" is not derogatory in the computer world, but it is someone who is creative and resourceful with code.

Google on Tuesday released the beta version of its latest desktop search application, Google Desktop 3 for
The enterprise version has all the functionality of the consumer version, which was released last week. But it allows network administrators to completely disable features, such as Search Across Computer. That feature, disabled by default, automatically stores copies of data on multiple computers.
Because the data travels through Google servers and is stored there for up to a month, privacy groups, like the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and network administrators have complained that it could lead to the compromise of sensitive data.

Research firm Gartner called the feature an "unacceptable security risk" and urged corporations to turn it off. Even Google officials in Europe have admitted that the feature is a risk for some corporations.
"Admittedly we're of two minds on this: on the one hand, we know that our friends on the Desktop team have gone to great lengths to protect users' data and privacy," Google wrote in a blog on its Enterprise Web site.

AOL, WebEx team up on instant-messaging
NEW YORK -- America Online Inc. and WebEx Communications Inc. are teaming up to provide a business version of AOL's popular AIM instant-messaging software.
Called AIM Pro, the business version will offer more security - communications, for instance, will be encrypted - and more features to help workers collaborate, using conferencing tools offered by WebEx, based in Santa Clara, Calif. AIM Pro users can communicate with those on the basic AIM, although not all features, including encryption, would be fully available.
Prices were not announced, but AOL said a monthly subscription fee is likely. Individual employees will be able to subscribe, or a company may order a version with centralized management controls for all its workers.
Instant-messaging took off among home users first, but in recent years employees have installed the software, usually on their own, as an alternative to phones and e-mail.
AOL, a unit of Time Warner Inc., responded by developing add-ons such as teleconferencing and Web conferencing aimed at small businesses. AOL said AIM Pro goes further by offering standalone software built expressly with businesses in mind.
"The new service will bring business-class IM, online conferencing, collaboration, desktop sharing and advanced multimedia services to the global workplace," said Brian Curry, vice president for premium and subscription services at AOL.
